The woodworking aspect of interior design is crucial and requires careful consideration. No matter how good your designs are, it will all be for nought if the right materials aren’t used for construction.

Conventional wood is vulnerable to decay, water damage, and termite infestations. As a result, engineered wood such as plywood, blockboard, particle board, etc. are used in all types of exterior and interior construction.

It’s common knowledge that plywood is the most widely utilized material due to its high-quality finish and polished appearance. Aside from its pleasing semblance, it is also available in a variety of grades/types. And each grade has its own set of characteristics, benefits, and drawbacks.

Many designers and architects often fail to distinguish between different grades of plywood and choose the right one for their project.

Therefore, in this blog, we will be going over the differences between BWP grade plywood and BWR grade plywood to help you choose the right plywood that will work well with your design ideas and construction plans.

Key Features of BWR & BWP Plywood

The two most common marine grade plywoods are BWP and BWR. Designed in the 1930s by Dutch door manufacturer Cornelius Bruynzeel, marine-grade plywood was used to construct boats during World War II.

Listed below are some of the key features to help you identify BWP plywood from BWR or vice versa.

BWP  BWR

BWP plywood means ‘Boiling Water Proof’

BWR plywood means ‘Boiling Water Resistant’

It can bear humidity and moisture for a long time without delamination

Although not waterproof, it is highly resistant to water

 ISI specification number is IS:710

 ISI specification number is IS:303

Used in the construction of furniture that is exposed to steam and water for a long duration

Used in making furniture or cabinet structures in residential and commercial interiors

Phenol formaldehyde resin glue is used in its making

Resorcinol phenol formaldehyde is used in its making

Although these have their own unique properties, both BWP and BWR grade plywoods are specially treated to make them termite resistant, with anti-warp properties. With that being said, keep in mind that BWR is a grade lower than BWP, making it relatively cheaper.
In conclusion, take into consideration the properties of each of these grades before you buy materials for your next project.
